Living Data logo and banner image: Dancers by Martina Doblin.

This is an image of a single-celled, marine diatom (microscopic plant) called Asterionellopsis sp., which has formed a long chain of ‘dancing’ cells. The colours created using prisms on the microscope provide a pretty backdrop and enhance the impression of movement.  Diatoms are the bottom of the food web, and they are eaten by a variety of animals including zooplankton and shellfish, as well as some whales.

Image produced with the support of the Old Dominion University Research Foundation, in conjunction with the Depts. of Art, and Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, the College of Arts and Letters, and the College of Sciences at the Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA.
